As a millenial i have seen may be too many technological shifts in my short lifetime of 40 odd years. Being born in a developing nation with limited technological acces, life was slow, no rush.
The priority of government was very basic but essential- Provide Food, Clothes, Home (ROTI, KAPDA, MAKAAN)
Landline phones, Television, cars were accessible for only priviledged ones. During my childhood we got radio as our means of entertainment where we used to wait for the Chitrahar, Binaca geetmala and ofcourse on Sunday afternoon the Diamond comics overview for the upcoming Chacha choudhery comics.
We as children and our parents and our joint family had time to spend with each other. We didn’t had much in terms of facility but we had time:
Life was slow and we were content living that life..
Then in the 90’s we got TV becoming more accessible as means of entertainment which we still had limited access as their were only 2 channels to begin with. but the cartoons on DD metro were lot better than what i see today(except the anime which mainly is for the adult audience). Gradually landline phones were within reach so communication between relatives/friends became easier. With the 2000’s era technology started to evolve at an increased pace. First 2G came and with it came mobile phones and the ease of communication began. Very rapidly within span of 10 years we had 4G technology being launched. In parallel the Computer technologies were also evolving rapidly and making its impact in social strata. Post covid, Technology has grown exponentially especailly in the field of AI. So much so that millions of white color jobs as we not it may become extinct in next 3-4 years from now. This shift is way to qucik to react for anyone. Everyone is feeling the heat. Even engineers working in top AI companies have realized something is not right and we are witnessing significant number of resignations where engineers are not switiching company but all together getting out of it.
If we look it from a capitalistic mindset, we all strive for growth, to become better than what we were yesterday. But the area of growth is unfortuanetly heabvily focusssed on materialistic domain. We are ignoring on how to become a better human being who strives to protect the environment, the social welfare, self well being.
And a question arose in my mind:
Are we compromising way to much just to grow our profits?
The answer will be different in different context. My view point is that i dont want to exhaust all resources for myself only. I want to ration my growth and keep it controlled , not exponential. There is a saying Eat only that much which you can digest
